Advanced Gin Rummy tips for Gin Rummy beginners

It has been said over and over again that playing gin rummy is very easy. Others even say that they teach gin rummy to practically anyone who can manage to hold cards. But, of course, this is an ill underestimation of the capacity of the gin rummy game and, consequently, the gun rummy players. In fact, the easier games are the ones harder to fully master. Unlike Poker, gin rummy does not have a number of combinations the players can use. In gin rummy, the melds consist of either three of four cards with the same face value or a sequence of cards in the same suit. This is unlike Poker, where the knowledge of the number of card combinations is the key to winning. Also, while not letting your opponent know your cards is essential in gin rummy, it is more essential in Poker. After all, it is in Poker where the term “Poker face” was derived (having a poker face means having a deadpan, expressionless look, one of skills necessary to play Poker). However, gin rummy owes its appeal exactly because of that simplicity. It could be true that anyone can play gin rummy. However, not everybody can play gin rummy effectively. Here are some reminders and tips for gin rummy beginners who want to advance their game.

Major elements

According to gin rummy experts, there are three major elements a player must use to become a skillful gin rummy player. The first among these skills is mathematics. One need not be a math expert to become an expert gin rummy player. It is merely important for a player to understand the odds of winning or losing and the value of scoring. This is especially important if a player is thinking of a strategy to create the perfect meld combination. One should remember that there are only a limited number of particular cards, and with these odds one should quickly come up with the strategy appropriate to the cards at hand, the cards that have already been thrown in the discard pile, and the odds that are yet to be picked in the stock pile. Another element is memory. Obviously, a player has to remember what cards have already been played. Lastly, strategy and quick thinking are important. Gin rummy is a fast-paved game; the winner can be decided in less than a minute and the advantage shift can happen in an instant. This is why being able to develop a good hand as well as strategize to counter the opponent’s tactics are important skills to master in gin rummy.

Mind your cards

The cards one keeps and the cards one discards play a vital role in the gin rummy game. Many gin rummy players say that keeping middle value cards are far more useful than keeping low or face value cards. Middle cards are easier to use in runs. Consider this: an ace can only work with a card combination of two and three. Meanwhile, a seven can work for several combinations: five-six, with six and eight, or with eight and nine. One should also remember what he discards and what his opponent gets from the discard pile. Since the discard pile has upward cards, one can see the card that will be drawn. With this, one should think: “can my opponent create a meld using the cards he picked up?” If one has already predicted the opponent’s strategy, he should not discard that he thinks can help his opponent create melds. Also, players should not mindlessly get cards from the discard pile. The odds of getting better cards are better in the stock pile. Besides, getting cards from the discard pile is like showing the opponent one’s strategy. This is why the stock pile is always the better choice when getting cards for meld creation.

Do not take chances

One should never go for broke in gin rummy—all strategy must be carefully played, One example for this are the cards one draws at the start of the game. Usually, players get three to four unmatched cards that are of high value. During the beginning of the game, it may be wise to keep them. However, after the sixth or seventh turn, one should start discarding it. Also, if a player can already knock, he should do so as soon as possible, or risk losing to the opponent. A player usually continues playing despite the opportunity of a knock thinking he could get a loser score. However, this is a risk. In sooner one can knock, the better—provided the player thinks the opponent cannot undercut him.
